Description
This design of handcarder has evolved in our workshop over the last 35 years. When we first
started making them a study of the existing designs lead us to believe we could make
improvements. First was to make the handle easy to grip by making it nice and chunky. The
current turned design is what it became. To avoid scraping your knuckles on the card cloth we
tried different angles of setting of the handle and again arrived at the current design. For
strength and lightness we have used plywood for the backs. Finally the card cloth was decided
on. A three ply woven cotton foundation with rubber facing, this gives the desired support to
the wires and flexibility. What we now have has resulted in sales of thousands of them over
the years. Finally a few years ago we obtained the machinery from our supplier to
manufacture the card cloth. We now produce the card cloth in tin plated and stainless wire in
various point spacing.
These are better suited for fine fibres including cotton and also the finer wools. They are
made in the same way as the standard carders but have a finer set wire covering. 108 points
per square inch.
* 350gms / 22cm x 12cm overall size. Carding surface 18cm x 9cm
* Backs made from birch ply, for lightness and strength.* Balanced to give a light easy
action.
* Covered in 108 point card cloth with 3 ply rubber back for durability. Tin plate or Stainless
steel wire option. The only advantage of stainless wire is the resistance to rust if they ever got
wet.
* Wire is 25 Carder Wire Gauge. Over the last 40 years this has been found to be the
optimum wire for best handcarding results.
Please Note: The card cloth wire has a light coating of oil to lubricate it during manufacture.
This is normally so light that it is not noticeable. Sometimes the application has been a little
more and it can show on the wool. We suggest that you initially use the carders with some
